Trailblazing former Congresswoman Pat Schroeder will give the keynote address this year at a Pasco Democratic Party luncheon celebrating "Women Who Make a Difference."

The April 29 luncheon will be the Pasco County Democratic Executive Committee's first major fundraiser since 2009. "We're motivated. We're proud of being Democrats," new Chairman Lynn Lindeman said. "We want to do fundraisers that also address issues we care about."

A trained pilot and Harvard-educated lawyer, Schroeder, 71, was Colorado's first woman elected to Congress. She was first elected in 1972 when she was a 32-year-old mother of two. She was re-elected 11 times and co-founded the Congressional Women's Caucus, which she chaired for a decade.

"She really made a difference in Congress," Lindeman said.

Some of Schroeder's most notable accomplishments include convincing the Armed Services Committee to allow women to fly combat missions and, in 1992, the passage of the Family Medical Leave Act.

Schroeder confronted blatant sexism from fellow members of Congress and often spoke about the "frat house" atmosphere.

Doris Rosen, president of Pasco County National Organization for Women, said she invited Schroeder to speak to local Democrats after learning that she had retired to the Orlando area.

"I heard her speak once at a NOW conference, and every word was golden," Rosen said. "She was just so dynamic, and she has a great sense of humor."

Rosen hopes the $60-a-plate luncheon will bring in enough money for Democrats to open a party office in Pasco.

Tickets are available for the luncheon and a VIP Mimosa reception, for an additional $30, at Heritage Pines Country Club on April 29. For more information and tickets, contact Rosen at 727-364-5666 or go to www.pascodems.com
